Watch mayoral candidates debate their visions for St. Petersburg live
Candidates for mayor of St. Petersburg are expected to debate the city’s main issues today at an online event hosted by the Tampa Bay weather and Spectrum Bay News 9.
The debate will be broadcast live at noon here on tampabay.com/politics and on Bay News 9, then rebroadcast on Bay News 9 at 7 p.m.
Time Political editor Steve Contorno and Bay News 9 presenter Holly Gregory are moderators.
Although the moderators did not share the debate questions in advance, it is likely that participants will be asked to comment on the future of the redevelopment of the Tropicana Field site, as well as on issues related to equity. , police reform, development and transport.
The candidates who qualified are: City Council members Darden Rice and Robert Blackmon; former Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch; former member of city council and state representative Wengay Newton; restaurateur Pete Boland; small business owner Marcile Powers; Michael Ingram, political science student at the University of South Florida; Torry Nelson; and former congressional candidate Michael Levinson.
The primary election is August 24. If no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates will face each other in the general election on November 2.
