Facebook only allows people who are authorized by a political party to place ads on its platform, said Roy Tan, head of government policy and outreach at Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp during of the recent “Ready to Run” training campaign for women candidates in the elections held in Suva.

Mr. Tan added that the person placing the election advertising must indicate who is paying for the advertising.

“You’ll need to get cleared first, so you have to be based in Fiji, you have to show ID showing you’re based there,” he said.

“You are allowed to place ads by creating a disclaimer, so you must create a disclaimer stating who paid for the ad, such as paid by xxx, paid by xxx organization.”

“Your ad is shown to the public, it will say you know all sponsors or ads have a sponsor. It will say sponsored and paid for by xxx and so it’s very clear who is paying for it. It’s very transparent and this goes to what we call an ad library for an archive for a period of seven years what is going on is completely transparent to everyone you can see which pages or other pages are posting what kind of political ads or elections and you can see who is paying them.

Mr Tan said Facebook took at least four days to approve a request from someone authorized to place ads on its platforms.
