Event
The opposition political alliance Yewwi Askan Wi plans to demonstrate at Place de l’Obelisk (also called Place de la Nation) in Dakar from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on June 17. It’s unclear whether the city administration has approved the protest, but activists say the will meet with or without permission. Opposition supporters are protesting the rejection of the Yewwi Askan Wi list of candidates for the upcoming July parliamentary elections. Hundreds of people can participate in the demonstration.
Heightened security and localized business and transportation disruptions are likely around the assembly site. Clashes between protesters and rival security forces or political supporters are possible.
Tips
Avoid all protest sites on June 17 due to possible clashes. If violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately and seek refuge in a safe non-governmental building. Expect localized transportation disruptions and allow extra time to reach nearby destinations. Heed all official traffic and safety advisories.
