As Governor Andrew Cuomo enters the twilight of his political career, he has three options. Resign and hope in the years to come that he can rehabilitate his image and his career. Second, continue to fight the inevitable future impeachment by the state legislature. Three, if they still cling to power, are running for the Democratic primary in June 2022 for a fourth term.
Most of his old friends, whether they were other public office holders, party leaders, major campaign contributors or union supporters, have given up on the ship. A $ 16 million campaign war chest won’t earn him another term. Cuomo’s fatigue took hold. While he decides what to do, he will have less time to deal with other ongoing issues facing New Yorkers.
If Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul were to become governor, she would be preoccupied with winning the Democratic Party primary of June 2022 to run for a full four-year term. Being attached to Cuomo’s political hip can negatively impact his ability to gain the cooperation of the state legislature.
Political sharks have already started to surround Cuomo’s political carcass. Many are now considering their own gubernatorial candidacy.
