While leaders are making new promises this election, old ones seem to have been forgotten. Rostrum correspondent Neha Saini and photojournalist Sunil Kumar highlight some of the biggest issues no one is talking about this election season
The battle lines have been drawn and the stakes claimed. The campaign grew sharper and sharper, but burning issues were again pushed aside. Several elections have taken place, but the fundamental problems facing the citizens of Amritsar remain unchanged, with no solution in sight. Here are some of those issues…
Once a main issue in almost every election, it remains unresolved to this day. Moving the landfill has been the subject of several discussions and debates in previous elections. Residents face health risks and several attempts to manage waste at the landfill through scientific methods have repeatedly failed. Interestingly, this time, this issue is not on the list of any political candidate vying for votes.
Another lost and never found project is the ambitious Multipurpose Sports Stadium in Block E of Ranjit Avenue. The foundation stone for the stadium was laid in 2011. The proposed facility was to have a cricket pitch, athletics track and football pitch, in addition to lawn tennis courts. Currently, the site has turned into a dumping ground with no further announcements being made about its future.
Ruined traffic management
Another major issue that seems to have caught no attention from any political candidate is the crumbling traffic management and parking issues in the city. Due to the lack of parking spaces and good traffic management, traffic jams and traffic jams have become a nuisance for citizens. All major hubs and commercial locations have become major bottlenecks, making it almost difficult to drive a two-wheeler or four-wheeler. Lack of parking spaces in major malls such as Hall Bazaar, Katra Jaimal Singh, Telephone Exchange, Karmo Deohri, Guru Bazaar Shastri Market, Raja Market, Katra Ahluwalia, Majith Mandi, Loon Mandi, Daal Mandi, etc., n This has only added to the woes, with haphazardly parked vehicles chomping the roads intended for travel.
Trash disposal and broken sewer issues are a headache for residents. Almost all constituencies in Amritsar face this problem. The big name political winners in these constituencies have failed to provide solutions to these fundamental problems. Illegal encroachments only increased and without any control.
