Political Tribalism: Why People Who Were Willing To Inject Bleach Refuse COVID-19 Vaccination
I recently received a text from our local pharmacy asking us to contact two friends or family and tell them to get the shot. That it is even necessary illustrates this nation’s worst affliction today: political tribalism.
In the wake of the most devastating public health crisis of our lives, a crisis that has killed over half a million people here in the United States and left us all in lockdown for over a year. out – it just shouldn’t be.
No one should beg the adult human beings who have been the loudest for months demanding that we “reopen America” to do the one thing that could make this happen quickly and safely.
And the tragedy of it all is that without the previous president and his party’s relentless attacks on science, medicine and empathy since the start of the pandemic – they would have already been vaccinated. It just wouldn’t be a problem.
This resistance to being vaccinated is not based on reliable evidence suggesting a medical risk, it is simply the putrid fruit of a political movement that has been tampering with a plot since the first day of this disaster: the former president spending months minimizing the virus. , debating the death toll, mocking mask wearers, pushing for bogus remedies and turning safeguards into a form of anti-American oppression.
In other words, had Donald Trump simply said when it all started: “This is a serious danger. We are all together. It has nothing to do with politics. We all need to mask ourselves, walk away, wait for a vaccine and get it once it arrives. That is what the Conservatives would have done and we would not be here.
We would not beg friends, relatives and co-workers for a vaccine that they now seem to fear more than the virus itself. FoxNews would not launch an ongoing anti-mask and anti-vaccine program designed to convince people to avoid sound medical advice and resist healthcare.
“And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks her out in a minute.” And is there a way to do something like that, by injecting in or almost by cleansing, because you see it goes into the lungs and it’s a huge number on the lungs, then it would be interesting to check that out. – Donald Trump, April 23, 2020
We couldn’t stand people who told us all last year to take hydroxychloroquine, despite its documented dangers in such use – now refusing a carefully designed vaccine designed precisely to protect them against this virus. Tens of millions of Americans would not opt out of the medical treatment most countries around the world expect, and millions of people are literally dying without it right now.
And we wouldn’t listen to our parents, aunts, neighbors and politicians talking about a vague hesitation they say they can’t explain. I can explain it, Conservatives: you have been brainwashed. You are afflicted with partisan politics and bad theology, and you are unable to think clearly because of it. You are so determined to validate your vote that you will do anything to make you feel that way.
And as mourning as last year, and all the senseless losses, canceled plans and emotional trauma we’ve been through, this year is perhaps even more tragic because the help we’ve all been waiting for is here, and much of this nation is refusing it, all to declare their allegiance to a former president and a political party that has armed this pandemic from the moment it started, and inexplicably turned it into a partisan event.
And so, the collective immunity that they’ve all spent months pining for probably won’t be, precisely because they’re taking a stand against science and facts and Democrats. They literally “own the Libs,” a hill on which they are prepared to die – or kill a lot of other people.
A friend of mine shared her exasperation with family members supporting Trump, saying, “I’ve tried everything. I tried to show them the vaccine development process, I’m tired of giving them the science. I have tried the guilt, the pleading, and the appeals for compassion from Jesus, but nothing is working. They just won’t get vaccinated because they have come to think that getting it would be a defeat.
And that’s the sad truth here: the refusal of tens of millions of professed adults to be vaccinated despite the unthinkable death we have witnessed is a symptom of a political movement that was so devoid of ideas, it had to turn a pandemic into a war against their adversaries. In doing so, they have made opposition to the vaccine a political stance that simply wastes lives, delays progress and exacerbates suffering.
If only we could figure out how to give people immunity from ignorance and strengthen their empathy …
