Ivory Coast: former first lady Simone Gbagbo launches a political party

Former Ivorian first lady Simone Gbagbo officially launched her political party three years before the presidential election. The only candidate, Simone Gbagbo, became president of the MGC, Movement of Capable Generations, on Saturday. This decision is further proof of the end of her partnership with her future ex-husband Laurent Gbagbo, by whom she was held during the ten years of his presidency and her legal setbacks.

“We are a party whose ideal is to build a reconciled Côte d’Ivoire, full of justice and equity.” said Simone Gbagbo after being appointed president of the MGC (Movement of Capable Generations) in Abidjan.

The 73-year-old politician has criticized Alassane Ouattara’s national reconciliation process under which his ex-partner won a presidential pardon two weeks ago. “The presidential pardon granted to President Laurent Gbagbo by way of amnesty weighs even more on the socio-political atmosphere of the country, so we will not say thank you to Alassane Ouattara.”, commented the former first lady.

Laurent Gbagbo’s amnesty could still prevent him from running as a candidate in the 2025 elections. The couple Laurent and Simone Gbagbo were both convicted for their role in the post-election violence in 2010. to 20 years in prison for “undermining state security”, she also benefited in 2018 from the amnesty law.

On Saturday, the president of the MGC, declared that her party was committed to fighting against discrimination, and to defending loyalty, integrity and incorruptibility.
