How to check which political party you were registered under and how to resign

Kenyans can now confirm which parties they have knowingly and/or unknowingly registered through the Political Parties Registration Office, ORPP.

A multi-party system was introduced in Kenya in 1992 by the late Daniel Arap Moi, then president. Since then, many parties have multiplied in the political arena. Currently, the country has more than thirty political parties.

Kenyans can now confirm which parties they have knowingly and/or unknowingly registered through the Political Parties Registration Office, ORPP.

IPPMS has been integrated into the E-citizen platform and is accessible free of charge according to the Registrar of Political Parties and among others intended to manage and maintain the database of political party records.

A pilot version of the IPPMS was temporarily disabled after many Kenyans who accessed the platform protested against them registering in parties without their consent, raising questions about the security of citizens’ data.

Political formations in a given country are legal entities with their rights and responsibilities. As such, each establishment has its own criteria and latitude to decide what must be satisfied to become a delegate. Eligibility for membership is stipulated in the constitution of the political party.

As the membership register needs to be constantly updated, members should keep checking their membership status. Fortunately, the process has been made easier through an online portal.

How to Join a Political Party in Kenya

  1. The rules of procedure of the formation must clearly define the conditions of recruitment of the members.
  2. The establishment must provide membership cards of a specific standard
  3. The membership verification form must be completed by both the formation and the delegate
  4. The list of members must be maintained and continuously updated by the party
  5. The establishment must keep and update a list of the contributions paid according to the constitution of the formation
