# Halalan2022: possible presidential bets to woo Aksyon Demokratiko, officer
MANILA – Some possible presidential candidates in next year’s elections are currently seeking favor from the political party Aksyon Demokratiko, (AD) said one of its leaders.
Aksyon Demokratiko general secretary Ernest Ramel said that in addition to meeting with Senator Panfilo Lacson, who is considering another presidential candidacy, party officials are also expected to meet at least 4 other potential candidates for the top job in the country. country.
“The party has discussed with other potential presidential candidates. After that we [follow] our own party mechanism. We will discuss it between the officers and the members of the party. And from there we’ll decide, ”Ramel said in an interview with ABS-CBN News, declining to name the candidates.
The party will assess what they heard from those officials before finally deciding who to approve and merge with in September, he said.
Aksyon Demokratiko, he said, would take into consideration the principles, mode of governance and background of the candidate, among others.
“We have to check a lot of things in the boxes… do we share this government platform that they are going to pursue. Of course, the background of the candidate is very important. Secondary na ‘yung winnability (Winnability is secondary), ”Ramel said.
He also stressed that his party is unwilling to support potential candidates in the administration, as well as that of the ruling PDP-Laban party.
The Aksyon Demokratiko party has always advocated for the promotion of the rule of law, which it says contrasts with the administration’s record on extrajudicial executions and defends the death penalty, corruption and criminal acts. issues involving the LGBTQIA + community.
The Duterte administration has repeatedly denied any involvement in summary assassinations in its war on drugs.
MEETING WITH PACQUIAO
Senator Manny Pacquiao also sent out “feelers” over a month ago, requesting a meeting, Ramel said.
Pacquiao, who is known to prepare for a presidential candidacy, is currently embroiled in internal feuds within the ruling party.
Aksyon Demokratiko officials are inclined to accept Pacquiao’s reunion request, although the chances of him securing their support may be vague due to his stance on various issues, he added.
“His position in favor of the death penalty, ‘yong kanyang stance EJK’ and even ‘yong kanyang openly perceives and declares the LGBTQ community … which goes against our principles … But we might want to – just being to hear it… We are not so keen (to support it), ”the secretary general said.
When asked if the party’s perception of the boxer-turned-politician would change if he softened his stance on said issues, Ramel said: “It would be a 100-degree turn and it won’t suit his own. constituency. “
In 2016, Aksyon Demokratiko started with over 400 members, but was “wiped out” right after the election, he noted.
Still, the party contributes a lot to the country’s political spectrum with its fresh, young leaders pushing for real reforms, like the mayor of Pasig, Vico Sotto.
“Among those who are standing right now, we have no baggage, we have no corruption implications. And interestingly enough, a lot of people want to join in on the fun because of Mayor Vico Sotto. “
AD, for its part, is pushing for “political party reforms” where as young as high school students should be educated on the importance of a political party and their appreciation of the ideology of each group or take a stand on issues. such as labor, economics and human rights. .
“From the pool of those who join the party, from the pool that we are developing, the young people, we can of course follow them, so that they may pursue their political career, rather than raising funds from businessmen. na nagiging beholden tuloy sila is certain interests, rather than ideologies and principles, ”he said.
Other notable members of Aksyon Demokratiko are Pasig Town Representative Roman Romulo and former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay, who was part of the opposition Otso Diretso coalition in the 2019 midterm elections.
Last week, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said the Nationalist Popular Coalition, which he chairs, planned to merge with AD for the next national polls.
