Grand reopening of Holland restaurant that defied COVID mandates attracts GOP candidates
HOLLAND, MI – A rally outside a Dutch restaurant that recently reopened after defying previous COVID restrictions brought out GOP candidates and others, many in hopes of curbing state authority used for them. mandates related to the pandemic.
The event at Marlena’s Bistro and Pizzeria was considered a “grand reopening,” even though Marlena Pavlos-Hackney officially reopened her restaurant on September 21.
It had been closed since she spent five days in jail in March after the state suspended her food license and she continued to operate. Throughout the winter, the restaurant was open for in-person meals against state restrictions due to COVID-19.
Saturday’s event featured a “Trump Unity” trailer with Trump merchandise available for sale.

Pavlos-Hackney, in a speech to the crowd, noted his support for former President Donald Trump and expressed his desire to return him to power “so that he can rule this country and we can get our republic back”.
Pavlos-Hackney wore a kitchen apron as she spoke to the public standing in her parking lot. She had just come out after helping run the restaurant.
“It’s really tough being a business owner, not just me, but all of you who own a business, to make sure we can survive. The government and the government entities, they have nothing to lose, ”she said.

Saturday’s rally drew various GOP candidates for governor and other positions, including Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District and Michigan’s 6th Congressional District.
Some speakers also referred to the latest efforts to curtail state powers, in particular the power of the state health ministry to issue emergency orders beyond 28 days. A petition is circulating in the state.
Mary Monarch from Grand Haven came to the event with her young grandson.
She came to support Pavlos-Hackney and hear the various stakeholders.
“I have been (Marlena) since day one. She represents all of us, ”she said.
