Clashes between supporters of rival political parties in Mormugao
Police arrest nine and search for 38 others
PANJIM: A tense situation prevailed in Mormugao constituency following clashes between supporters of rival political parties late Friday evening.
The clashes and scuffle occurred during Holi celebrations when a group of revelers assaulted Pradeep Mayenkar, father of Mormugao adviser Prajay Mayekar, as he was returning home.
Mormugao police have so far arrested nine people and are looking for 38 others, who are believed to be on the run.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Director General of Police (DGP) ID Shukla visited the victim on Saturday, who is recovering in Chicalim sub-district hospital.
Later, Sawant told reporters that harsh action would be taken against the culprits and no one would be spared. He said that the flavor of violence of the “Trinamool Congress Party” has been adopted by the Congress party. Goa never had the culture of beating the workers and the supporters of a single, who had lost. It is the culture of Congress and the TMC and the government will not tolerate such acts of violence, he said.
DGP Shukla said an FIR has been registered against around 47 people and so far nine have been arrested. Police have started a search operation in the areas, he said, adding that all those named in the FIR should either surrender to the police or be arrested. All of the culprits were captured by the CCTV camera, he said.
Mormugao Councilor Prajay Mayekar alleged that workers and supporters of newly elected Congressman Sankalp Amonkar attacked his parents and threw stones at his house.
On the other hand, Nitin Bhagat claimed that after Pradeep Mayenkar’s vehicle hit him, the latter got out of the car and started abusing him. Soon Mayenkar’s younger brother hit a rock on the head and it erupted into heated arguments between the two sides resulting in scuffles and clashes.
Bhagat also accused the police of not helping him when he came to the police station with a bleeding head.
Meanwhile, the Congress Party reacted strongly on Saturday and alleged that the authoritarianism and dictatorship of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had started in the state and that the “morons” of the BJP were targeting Congress workers, in particularly in constituencies where BJP candidates lost. miserably.
In a press release, Congress Media Cell Chairman Amarnath Panjikar said, “It is regrettable that the police are protecting BJP goons instead of protecting citizens.
“I am shocked that Acting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant went to create political drama in Mormugao by visiting a patient admitted to Chicalim Hospital with political illness,” Panjikar said.
He called on the DGP to ensure that strict action is taken against the real culprits who assaulted Congress workers as they celebrated Holi at Bogda in Mormugao.
According to Panjikar, the person (Mayenkar) admitted to the hospital actually tried to run over one of the Congress workers with his car. It is BJP culture to run over innocent people with vehicles,” he said.
Panjikar said the BJP candidates who lost the Assembly elections are now frustrated and have started harassing and abusing people who did not support them. Such incidents are reported in Quepem, Cuncolim, Saligao, Curtorim and many other constituencies. Congress officials will not remain silent spectators if this continues, he warned and demanded that the DGP take such incidents seriously and protect the people of Goa.
