Burden of completing Polavaram R&R on Center: political parties
Communist Party of India (CPI) Secretary of State K. Ramakrishna, PA Congress President Sake Sailajanath and other top left-wing party leaders decided on Thursday to meet to pressure the central government in order for it to complete the resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) of nearly one lakh displaced families from the affected area of the Polavaram Irrigation Project.
A virtual meeting was organized on the issue, and was moderated by the CPI. “It is the responsibility of the Center to carry out the R&R exercise in accordance with the PA Reorganization Act, 2014. The Center cannot disclaim its responsibility now,” said Mr. Ramakrishna.
He also said it would be unwise to place any hope on the state government to complete the R&R exercise, given the current state of its finances.
“Pressure can be exerted on the Center to provide financial support for the R&R program only with the support of all political parties in the state. The state government should also be prepared to convince the Center to provide a financial subsidy for the R&R program as well, ”said Mr. Ramakrishna.
In his address, Mr. Sailajanath said that the government of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy failed to convince the Center about the financial components of the Polavaram irrigation project. He added that Congress was ready to join all parties to fight for R&R issues.
A decision was made to conduct field visits to the affected areas of the Polavaram Irrigation Project to inspect the resettlement and rehabilitation exercise by the end of June.
