BJP opposes President’s decision to recognize JVM as a political party

On Monday, the second day of the current budget session, the state BJP objected to President Rabindra Nath Mahto’s decision to recognize the JVM, once led by Babulal Marandi until it merges it with the BJP, as a political party.

During the second half of the budget session, as part of Legislative Protocols, the Speaker allowed time for political parties to debate the vote of thanks and the amendment to the Governor’s address in the House. The ruling JMM party with maximum MPs was allotted 71 minutes, while the main opposition party BJP was given 64 minutes for debate, the Speaker, while allocating time, also allotted 8 minutes in Jharkhand Vikash Morcha (JVM) having three deputies.

BJP MP and former Assembly Speaker CP Singh objected to the President mentioning JVM as a political party. “You are establishing a new tradition. Time is not allocated solely on the strength of a political party in the House. There is a different system for this. The second point is that you have allocated three FMV members eight minutes. Can you tell me who are the three JVM deputies in the Chamber? Singh said.

The President interrupted him and said that he had taken note of the point raised by Singh. Singh countered and said the President was avoiding the question. “It was only in the previous Rajya Sabha election that Babulal Marandi was mentioned as a BJP MP in the electoral roll you published,” Singh said. He wondered if the Speaker of the Assembly was still referring to JVM as a political party, Pradeep Yadav had been appointed Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature.

The President said the case of the three JVM MPs and the dispute over the merger of the JVM into the BJP are pending in his court. Therefore, the FMV would continue to exist until the deal is finalized.

The president gave time to JVM lawmakers including Babulal Marandi, who rose to prominence as a BJP delegation led by party leader Deepak Prakash submitted a memorandum to Governor Ramesh Bais, demanding the appointment of the leader of the legislative party Babulal Marandi as leader of the opposition. The party is upset with the decision of Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto not to grant LoP status to Marandi even after more than two years.

Marandi, previously leader of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) had won three seats in Assembly elections held in December 2019. On February 11, 2020, he merged his party with the BJP and he was declared leader of its legislature. While Marandi joined the BJP, the other two JVM(P) MPs, Pradeep Yadav and Bandhu Tirkey, who were fired from the party on different occasions, joined the Congress.
