A listener explains why there is an increase in political party changes at the moment

Polk County Auditor Jamie Fitzgerald recently tweeted about the number of political party changes ahead of Tuesday’s primary. Fitzgerald tweeted that 412 changes were made, 334 to the Democrat and 78 to the Republican. He told KCCI that was not uncommon given that Iowa law requires voters who want to run in primary elections to choose a party. A political party is defined as your candidate receiving more than 2% of the vote in the last presidential or gubernatorial election. Republicans and Democrats are the only parties to reach this threshold. As for the party changes, Fitzgerald said it could be the result of a number of reasons. “There could be a candidate reaching out to another party saying elect me. They might have a message that resonates with those voters. So you see a big crossover/mix of who’s switching parties,” Fitzgerald said. Fitzgerald adds that the change in party affiliation could also be based on the Statehouse and Supervisor races.
