2023: Youth groups usher in a new political movement

Drama ensued at Government House, Awka, yesterday during the inauguration of Charles Chukwuma Soludo as Governor and Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim as Deputy Governor of Anambra State when the wife of the outgoing Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, Ebelechukwu and Mrs Bianca Ojukwu were involved in a fracas at the event.
It was then that agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano.
Obiano was arrested around 8:30 p.m. at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State, yesterday.
EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren confirmed the arrest of the former governor, promising to provide more details later.
There are, however, conflicting reports as to who slapped whom first.
Witnesses at the scene of the event said the incident happened immediately after Soludo was sworn in.
The action caught the attention of security guards and some VIPs who pulled Ms Obiano out of Bianca’s grip visibly shocked by the action.
Ms Obiano was then taken away and shortly after her husband left the scene as the incident happened after the new governor was sworn in.
Soludo and his deputy were sworn in by Anambra State Chief Justice Justice Onochie Anyachebelu at exactly 9:45 a.m. and had inspected an honor guard before the horrific incident took place.
Both took the oath of office and allegiance at Anambra Government House in a ceremony attended by hundreds of people.
In his address, Soludo said the new Anambra under his leadership would be a state of law and order.
He thanked the outgoing Governor, Chief Willie Obiano and the leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for their immense support.
He thanked the people of Anambra for interviewing him and employing him to serve them as their governor.
Soludo announced the suspension of all revenue collections in the state for a month and banned all cash payments to the Anambra government in car parks, roads or anywhere.
He stressed the need for peace and called on young people, politicians and agitators to embrace dialogue as it was the only panacea for peace.
The econometrics professor, during the presentation of his inaugural speech after his swearing in, said: “My heart bleeds to see and hear of our young people dying in senseless circumstances. All criminal gangs – kidnappers, evil murderers, arsonists, rapists, thieves – all now claim to be freedom fighters. Crime cannot be watered down. This must stop.
“All stakeholders now need to revisit both the narrative and the action plan. To begin with, I endorse the recent statement (7 March 2022) of the Joint Body of the Council of Traditional Leaders of the South East and Bishops/Archbishops on Peace and Conflict Resolution, calling for a tripartite discussion between them, the presidency and the Southeast. governors to deal with conflicts in the South East, particularly with regard to Nnamdi Kanu and the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
“There is no conflict that dialogue, in good faith, cannot resolve. Our government is determined to urgently restore peace and security to Anambra, and we will seek the active cooperation and collaboration of all stakeholders.
Soludo told IPOB/ESN, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and other armed groups that it was time to interrogate both the purpose and the means of their campaign.
He also warned politicians playing politics with insecurity that they are riding a tiger.
“The current trajectory is a road to desolation. Let’s sit around the table and talk. Let the elite come out of the closet, discuss our future and build consensus. The conspiracy of silence by the elite and some community leaders must end.
“If you see something, say or do something!” Securing Igboland and Nigeria must be our collective responsibility. Let those in the forests come out, surrender their weapons and work together to rehabilitate and empower you to contribute positively to the peace and prosperity of our homeland,” Soludo said.
On why his grand opening was a low-key event, Soludo said, “Today is my first day at work. I just showed up for work and will be working at least eight hours. We had over a month since the election to celebrate our historic victory. Now is the time to get to work, and there’s no minute or kobo to waste on fanfare.
“In a few minutes I will announce some of the key administration officers and begin with serious meetings of the Anambra State Security Council, followed by a meeting with the permanent secretaries, a meeting on Okpoko and my Strategy, Execution, and Evaluation (SEE) team.
“In the coming week, the list of commissioners will be laid before the House of Assembly. Tomorrow we will head to Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area and parts of Onitsha and Idemili as we signal our commitment to fundamental urban regeneration, starting with the great metropolis of Onitsha.
“I insisted that this event should not cost the Anambra government a kobo. I would rather use these resources to lay the foundation stone for a public hospital in Okpoko or elsewhere or empower our security guards to fight crime.
“Yes, there will be a time to celebrate. We will celebrate when: safety of life and property is guaranteed and law and order restored; every child of school age is in school; every school child receives 21st century education for the digital age.
Speaking on the shameful event, Soludo Media Office Manager Mr Joe Anatune said: “The breach was caused by inappropriate communication which itself stemmed from a personal issue between the two parties involved. in violation.
“Steps are being taken to resolve the misunderstanding and restore the parties to their prior relationship. Anambra State has been known over the years for its huge stock of social harmony, and this stock will increase significantly in the coming years as part of the concerted effort to accelerate the development of the state.
“God bless Anambra State, the light of the nation”.
In her remarks, Bianca Ojukwu congratulated Charles Soludo on his swearing in as Governor of Anambra State.
Bianca, in a post on her Facebook page, described the inauguration as “Anambra State Liberation Day.”
Her reaction comes after she got into a fight with the wife of the incumbent Governor of Anambra State, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano.
Ms Obiano, who many said was ready to fight, reportedly approached Ms Ojukwu from the front row of the event, where she was seated near outgoing Governor Chief Willie Obiano.
She allegedly rained abuse on her, causing Ms Ojukwu to punch her in the face as she (Ms Obiano) held and pulled Ojukwu’s hair before security guards separated the two women.
However, shortly after the celebration, Bianca wrote, “It is Liberation Day, and today we sing the Song of Redemption. Anambra will be better!
“Now I know exactly how those Israelites felt the day they took those first hesitant steps out of the land of Egypt… Just the excitement and anticipation of the liberation, the long-awaited return to the Promised Land had to keep them awake all their lives. tonight.
“This is the day the Lord has made…a day that reaffirms the age-old truth that no one holds the stage forever. I thank the Almighty for keeping us all alive to witness this day.
She added that a more dynamic and progressive Anambra is achievable.
“To him be the glory. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here.
“Yes, indeed… WE ARE THE BARRACKS!” she added.
However, activist, Deji Adeyanju of Concerned Nigerians, yesterday said the wife of outgoing Governor of Anambra State, Ebelechukwu Obiano; and widow of the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Bianca; acted like thugs when the two women publicly fought during Chukwuma Soludo’s inauguration as state governor.
Adeyanju also said the two women should be arrested by the police for breaching the public peace, noting that Bianca and Ebelechukwu set a bad precedent for young women attending the event.
The activist spoke in conversation with our correspondent while reacting to the clash of the two women at Government House, Agu-Awka, Awka, the state capital.
He said: “The police should arrest and charge the two women for disturbing public order. They are thugs. What happened is a bad precedent for young women. It’s unfortunate that those are the people we have up there. The loss of values is so evident. It’s sad.”
When contacted to find out if the police would invite the two women over for disturbing public order, Anambra Police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu said the Anambra State Police Command ‘Anambra saw no need to arrest the wife of the outgoing Governor of Anambra State, Ebelechukwu. Obiano; and widow of the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Bianca; for disturbing the public peace.
According to him, the security agents of Government House, Agu-Awka, Awka, the state capital, quickly intervened and prevented the fight between the two personalities from degenerating into a real brawl and the investiture of Chukwuma Soludo as state governor continued after.
The PPRO said: “Due to the intervention of security personnel, the dispute between the two personalities did not escalate. During this time, the event continued without further problems and if it is necessary to establish an interface between the two, the police command will do so.
Officers from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano.
It was established that Obiano was arrested around 8:30 p.m. at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State, yesterday.
The former governor, who was on the EFCC’s watch list, was said to have left the country for Houston, Texas, in the United States, when he was arrested by the anti-corruption agency.
The latest development comes hours after Obiano was handed over to Charles Soludo, the new governor of Anambra State.
The EFCC, after placing Obiano on a watch list in November 2021, requested the Nigeria Immigration Service to notify the Commission whenever the former Governor travels out of the country from any of the international airports, as well as other entry and exit points.
However, the anti-corruption agency did not say why it arrested Obiano and why he was placed on a watch list.
